WW-EAP Fabrication recipe - Carbon Nanotube EAP

Prepared by Giovanni Vozzi, University of Pisa, Italy, and revised by Liming Dai, University of Akron, Ohio, USA

The following process describes the fabrication recipe of Carbon Nanotubes. To help advancing the field further, I would appreciate it - if you make improvement of the described procedure - please share it with us by sending me an e-mail to yosi@jpl.nasa.gov.

1. Prepare solution of 10% of a PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol) in water
2. Prepare solution of 10% of a PAA (polyallylamine) in water
3. Mix 0.8-ml of 10% solution of PVA and 0.2 ml of 10% solution of PAA.
4. Add carbon nanotubes in 1-ml dimethylacetamide {DMA) at 5% concentration (best concentration)
5. Sonicate for 3 minutes using a step cycle (on 10s, off 10s).
6. Filtrate through a filter paper, yielding a carbon nanotube sheet
7. Heat the nanotube sheet at 80oC to dry it.
