BRIEF VITAE

 

·     Dr. Mike Lih is a Senior Member of Engineering Staff at Jet Propulsion Laboratory.  He began to work at JPL from 1995.   He received his PhD from the department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, UCLA in 1992.  His research includes vehicle dynamics, structural dynamics, composite materials, elastic wave propagation, nondestructive evaluate, adaptive optics, electro-mechanical devices and advanced actuators. Dr. Lih has over 50 technical publications.  He holds four issued US patents in the fields of electroactive actuators, ultrasonic applications, and precision mechanical devices and received the Space act awards from NASA and other varies awards JPL.  Dr. Lih is now leading the ADAMS Closed Loop and Monte Carlo code development for MSL Skycrane simulation and developing methodology to simulate Mar MSL rover releasing/ landing dynamics.  He also performed the state-space FEM based code development for the controlling of LFVI telescope.

·         Performed the analysis and testing for the dynamics response of vehicle structures for JPL MSL and other flight projects. Lead the ADAMS Closed Loop and Monte Carlo code development for MSL Skycrane simulation. 

·         Support the State-space FEM code development for LFVI telescope.

·         Conducted the research of the NASA NRA Wireless Controlled Large Aperture project (Principle Investigator).

·         Performed the preliminary modeling and correlation of the tunable beam pyroshock.

·         Lead the testing, data acquisition and software development for the system for the Advanced Health Monitoring of Steam Pipe Systems Project

·         Performed the research of “Novel Compact Source of Multiple Radiation types Using a Single Ferroelectric Element (MRUSFE) for In-situ Characterization and Life Detection Instruments project.

·         Performed the research to predict the wrinkle patterns of membrane RF antenna reflector.

·         Performed the research to predict the nonlinear deformation of thin optics actuated by electro-active polymers.

·         Performed the research of developing new techniques for hybrid electro-activated deformable mirrors composed of the nano-laminate materials, piezoelectric material, and shape memory materials.

·         Designed experimental methods and perform modeling of smart materials (Piezoelectric, Electrostrictive, and Magnetostrictive materials) for space applications.

·         Lead and conducted R&D of the nonablative aeroshell project for next generation Mars entry vehicle.

l   Develop mathematical models and use Finite Element Analysis or other computational techniques to predict the dynamic response of aerospace composite structures, properties of adhesive bonds and damping of composite materials.

l   Design and performed a series of experiments to characterize the elastic properties of composite materials, adhesive joints, and damping of materials.

l   Prepare and make varieties of composite laminates for material testing.  Design experimental methods and analyze data from materials testing, acoustic emission and ultrasonic experiments.
